I have splits on two of my plants. Naturally it is my main plant and its backup. The main plant is a couple of feet longer than the other, but like it's backup it has a split at the bottom of the main only bigger. I have planted another backup in the area. To me the two plants sound like nothing but trouble for the rest of the season, but given the genetics it kills me to pull them.
I have used Captan on the wound. I have thought of putting something under the main and covering the area from the top. After it heals, I thought about putting silicone caulk on the wound. Suggestions would be appreciated. There is also the new backup which is much further behind. thanks

Kathy don't try to seal it with anything leave it open to scar up and breathe. A covering over the stump to keep rain out but let light in will help.

As long as the split runs lengthwise, there is not a lot of reason to be concerned. It won't affect any of the plant's transport system. Just treat for disease and keep it open. Maybe shield the split from rain. I have grown several like that without trouble. If the split goes crosswise, you have a big problem.

Kathy, I get one every year and I keep it covered and then wrap it in gauze to keep bugs out. This was a post from pap a couple years ago.
20.main vine splits occur often. we just spray on some fungicide and cover the split with a piece of wood, etc, just to keep the area dry.after several weeks the area will dry over and be ok.you could also wrap the area with a breathable gauze to keep borers, etc, out.we dont because we use a lot of systemic products that will kill any borers.

thank you all very much. RoweFields when I checked this afternoon I could barely see the split on the top, the worst is on the bottom where I can't take a picture.

I'd rather have a split up top and keep dry with something as simple as 2 pieces of wood nailed together like a roof then a split on the bottom getting less air. And with a bottom split you won't know what's going on all year.
