I was curious if any one else has looked at the ppm of nitrogen that work best for giving young plants an adquite amount of nitrogen early session? I did some experimentation at my college and based if NY study's found around 300ppm of fast acting nitrogen (chemical form) to show best results this was compared to just distilled water and azos and distilled water as control. I looked at the root formation as well.

Just curious if any one else has tried to figure what form and concentration in ppm works best early session?

But at what ppm\EC Shannon is I think what he's asking.

Good question as the little guys don't need much.

I will be honest I created my own fertilizer for earlier session growth called Ka-boom juice! It is a fast acting 300ppm fertilizer for nitrogen I tested it at school and it worked great! I'm gonna test it more this session.

If memory serves me. Nitrate nitrogen is for roots and it can have ill effects if foliar sprayed on leafs... If I remember correct. I don't measure ppm or ec .. I use about 1 table spoon of my favorite fish emulsion per gallon of water. It's a 5-1-1.. I'll sometimes add some fulvic acid to it as well when plants are small and some yellowing is seen.

I have used Ammonium sulfate each year 21-0-0 since it is fast acting and I have had no issues getting my plants to grow fast early on. I was also told it moves out fast too, so I'm not worried about N overload come pollination time.

How often do you use a liquid nitrogen fert like fish emulsion to get watermelon plants growing early on? Plants seem like they are growing good but starting to get a yellow tint on leaves between feelings. Thanks in advance.

You should not add nitrogen unless you are sure you need it. What are your soil temps? It is not easily available or mobile in cold soil temps....so if you keep feeding now it is sitting there until the soil warms up and you have overdone it

I use 1 cup per 36 sq feet of 12-0-0 bloodmeal inside of each hoop house. I have found that is the right amount to get them cranking this time of year and in a small enough area that they are not overly full of N when it is time to set pumpkins.
