For years I started my seeds April 15th and moved the date to April 8th last year. I still couldn't get a pollination in June like I wanted. I'm pretty far north so the plants take a little longer to grow. What's the magic date that works best for you?

I have been going earlier each year. First week of April or 4/5 is good here. I can have a 15-20 foot plant by end of May. I probably will never go to the Missouri weighoff since it is in October which makes no sense given our heat and need for mid June pollinations.

I'm thinking April 17th this year. The brutal winters have made it hard getting everything ready in time.

count backwards 140-160 days from weigh off. You need 40-60 days before pollination and 90-120 days for fruit growth.

I'm in a cold Zone 3 climate with an average Last frost date of 19 May. a couple things to consider. 1. the plant wont grow well until the soil is warm. 2. how will you protect the plant from frost?
you can start the seeds earlier, but unless you warm the soil and protect the plant, you won't have anywhere to put it. the simple solution is to build a cold froame or greenhouse to cover as much area as you can. even an unheated greenhouse, will warm the soil and protect the plant making it think it is a couple zones warmer in climate.

April 15 ,however soil cables start heating soil same day and 150 watt bulbs on thermostat heat the air in hoop..transplanting from pot to hoop happens when true leaf is less than 1/2 inch long

Obvious...too many variables to count. Location, is prbly #1, but then add hoop houses (or any variant) soil heating cables, added heat inside the lil house, and sunshine of course. I go by cntryboy's rule. Count backwards from your weighoff date!!! Peace, Wayne

Like wayne says depends on local last frost and whether theres some some extra heat source, ex greenhouse, heating cables.
