I just learned, even with lots of snow, the frost line in western New York goes down 4 feet!
What kind of prize can we win?
Will it be the beginning of permafrost?
Will it ever thaw out?
Stay tuned.. same bat channel..lol pumpkin post!

In Montana the water lines are buried 6ft deep.In Michigan our water lines were buried at 6 ft and saw them freeze 1 time in 10 years

Probably not too far from normal here. Only a couple reports of broken water mains in this part of Iowa so far. It is supposed to start warming up this weekend, which usually drives the frost a little deeper before it thaws out.

Yesterday a neighborhood had its sewer lines freeze causing raw sewage to back up in their bath tubs and more. Every one in that neighborhood had to stop using any water to keep the sewage from backing up into their houses.

Bill,

Under the 3 ft of snow in my yard the ground is NOT frozen. Being a natural insulator the snow protects the soil. If there was no snow and frozen and then snow it would have been frozen beneath the snow. Eventhough it would slowly thaw under that later snow. It freezes where there is no snow for protection and in that case 4 ft is a possibility. This is as cold a duration as I've ever experienced. Last night we went above 32 F for the first time in 34 days I believe. I think we are well above 200 inches for the season - not sure on the precise measurement. It's been a cold/snowy one here in Hamburg.

Ray is right. My backyard fish pond has about 2' of snow on top of the plywood cover. I checked it on Sunday and there was NO ice on it.

I am sure that ours is quite deep. We didn't have very much snow at the beginning of January so we had no snow for insulation. I am very concerned about my perennials.

Guys-gals-
I started the idea to break the winter blues. My water line from the well is about 7 feet below ground.
Ray- I thought about the snow as insulation, but a farmer friend had his line freeze six feet under.
LOL- I guess when my time comes I want to be pt 8 feet under instead of 6- that way I will not get cold feet..lol

last year with 3 ft of snow, the ground was not frozen under the snow. The roads froze 15ft deep, breaking waterlines and sewer lines.

this year our winter was the month of November... the east coast has had all the fun this year.

Bill,

Lots on the local news about Niagara Falls and their water line freezes. Your farmer friend must have line under exposed areas (driveway) and thus the 6 ft freeze. Many times farmers have covered areas above underground waterlines with hay as an insulator. Another potential situation might be where a drain tile is close to a waterline and a cold air draft contributes to the freeze. I grew up on our own water supply at our farm. Still would not want to be in the Niagara Falls neighborhood with the cronic problem. Spring is coming - another cold night tonight.
