And perma frost can be softened like a riding arena with magnesium chloride to get warm rain water a few weeks earlier into deeper soil. But pumpkins do not like too much chlorine. So better use black slag to warm soil surface in spring: http://www.blackbeautyabrasives.com/products/black-beauty-original-abrasives.php This glazed slag from burnt black coal accumulates all energy from sun. So even UV-B rays are collected, transformed into warmth and transmitted into soil some inches below the half inch of Black Beauty.
