Anybody do anything unusual that seems like a lot of work? For water (I grow at a community garden) I carry 2 five gallon buckets of water 50 yards to water them, when the pumpkins start growing and need more water it becomes a lot of work! The wheel barrel works but it is a balancing act! (My parents had to walk up hill 5 miles everyday to school) any a lot of work, unusual things you do for giant pumpkins?

During the summer, at dusk, I run around the yard with a bag trying to catch the poop from the bats...it takes some work to get a useable amount but it's worth it...

Mr Richard;
You are a Dedicated pumpkin grower,I know a good number of pumpkin growers that, if that was the only way to water your pumpkins is with carrying 2 five gallon buckets 50yds
" they would not grow them "

Yeah, wacky weed will make you see bats. Been there, done that.

Raoul Duke: [narrating] We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like:

Raoul Duke: I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive.

Raoul Duke: [narrating] Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:

Raoul Duke: Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

Thanks, I'm some what dedicated. For me gardening was on my bucket list of things that does not interest me, no thrill in it for me. But, I tried it, and I think it's awesome, it has become a hobby, something I enjoy doing. It's all that and a bag of chips for me!

One truck , 1 - 275 gal water tank , 1 generator , 1 pump , add hose and you have irrigation. Maybe your community garden could share the cost?

I had a lot of root rot disease and decided to dig drainage ditches to help dry the soil some. I dug 200' of ditch 2' deep, 5' wide at the top and 3' wide at the bottom, 100' of ditch 1' deep and 3' wide, and 25' of ditch 2' deep, 8' wide at the top and 6' wide at the bottom. I did it all myself with a shovel. I've also been known to deep till most of my garden with a fork and rake instead of the tiller. It probably explains why my back and shoulders are so bad. Next time I have to move dirt I'm renting a machine.

I have it a little easyer than richard.i fill 3 garbage cans full of water and then use a 2gal watering can to water my garden. I have a pump to pump out of a pond but all the mud and algy plug up any watering system. I need to build a filtering system before i can do an irrigation system.

VT Steve - Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, I love that movie!

Richard B - Where to I start? Hauling water by hand in 5 gallon pails from the creek in my old backyard up hill about 30 yards to my patch.

To create my last patch - digging out native heavy ass clay soil by hand and hauling it by hand to dump in ravine. The two dump truck loads of black soil to replace the clay were shoveled into wheel barrow and hauled about 100 yards from the dump pile in my front yard to my back yard patch. Didn't have the $ to rent a bobcat. Took forever. When I got to the end of the project my neighbor across the street who owns a front end loader, who presumably had been watching me struggle for weeks finally drove it over and finished the project. Sometimes I don't always work smart, but I agree that most people wouldn't haul water and do what it takes to make this hobby possible given a set of circumstances. Kudos to everyone who shows that level of dedication!

One year I decided I needed better drainage. So I rented a track hoe and installed 400 feet of weeping tile 24" down. I trucked in 30 yards of sand to line the runs and then backfilled the patches with 60 yards of fresh municipal compost from a nearby compost facility.

I let the patches sit until spring. Soil tests in the spring identified high sodium most likely this was from table salts used to prepare vegetables. I had to drench each patch for 30 hours with over head sprinklers in late March. I dug by hand surface run off trenches everywhere to leach the salts. Its was cold muddy and there was lots of ice.

I grew my first 400+ inch pumpkin that year but man it was a ton of work to get there.
