I grew the 840 Young in 2013. To me it was a deeper red than anything I have seen imcluding the 1059. I grew 4 on the plant that year and wish I had just done 1.

If you just after the HD award those are all great seeds.

But this guy grows them year after year ang gets 700lb perfect beauties.     702.5 Williams
"Howard Dill" award     568.5 Williams     701.5 Williams          10./ seed

You can find the at OVGPG website I have a few of his 2013 line if you want to grow it.Almost a guaranteed big orange kin.

I don't want to just flip a coin because I know some of the seeds are very random and while they are backed by orange crosses, there is no evidence of them so I rely on others information. I have been told some of the older genetics are prone to splits so again I have to rely on the results others have obtained. The 993 is high on my list to grow. Since I can only grow 2-4 plants I also need to consider crosses. Out of that group what would be the most intriguing crosses.

979 is not Ron Rahe´s mostly red colored fruit.
Why don´t you - greenhorn in cattle breeding - take the 470 Rahe 13, which is a reversed 979?
Choose also as a mother plant the 140 Rahe 14 a selfed C. maxima 'triamble' x AG cross from 2008.
When the 470 and the 140 are pollinated by the 979, you provoke the best red of mother genetics with the relatively dull 979 color.

I have grown the 1432 Northrup for many years and it always throws a beautiful medium to dark orange pumpkin with a flawless round, smooth shape.

I grew the 500 northrup in 2007 and it produced creamy light orange pumpkins. There is some variance in that seed.

The same with the 993 vm. A lot have been planted, with many well known winners and some less than desirable.

My 923 is a slight gamble as well, they are all very orange and several won HD awards but I have seen several peanut shaped 923 offspring as well. The 827 seemed to get a bad colored gene out of he 1332 used and it is producing lighter orange pumpkins. The 811 is the one but they are scarce.

I grew the 840 young last year when the 777 I had failed to germ. I got an extremely late pumpkin on the plant that was very pretty around 500 lbs.

My pick of all the seeds you have there is the 777 young. It got the best the 993 VM has to offer and was selfed thereby solidifying the line.

Best of luck- Jim Gerhardt

You are welcome to try my own 500.5 Warren 2013, which has already produced a very orange and round HD winner.

thank you for the suggestions and thanks Cliff for the offer; I may have to consider that for 2016 :). also considering growing an orange x 2009 cross as the 2009 is actually putting out very pretty and big pumpkins when crossed with orange.

what are thoughts on the 1662 stelts?

I can only echo cojoes selection. Jim nailed it with the 777 having inherited the best of the 993 but why not grow your own from the 993 in the event that you also 'teased' out the best. Same with the 1662 whch produced the 288 Buglio which was beautiful.

1. 777 or 840
2. 1662 or 288
3. 993
4. Got to be one of your own from 2014

Sorry for the hogging the board but I just read the 2009 bit.

What about the 1080 LaRiviere (2009x991), I'm guessing it ticks all the boxes. Seed count was low, Gene is out of them but I can point you in the direction of someone that does have two.
