Dear Fellow Growers
It's with a heavy heart that I'm posting the passing of our very own Sally Hunt from cancer. As most of you know, Sally was the heart & soul of the Pumpkinfest for many years. Her dedication to the sport here in Ontario is second to none. Sally was a kind, honest, fun-loving lady who was taken from us much too early in life. Jane & I are shocked & deeply saddened by the news. Our thought & prayers are with Sally & her family during this very difficult time. She will be sadly missed by her many, many friends in the GVGO & the entire giant pumpkin community.

Here is a letter from her family. Thanks.

Hello to friends of Sally Hunt. This is not Sally, but her brother Brian Chamberlain. With a heavy heart and just as much shock as many of you will feel, I must announce the sudden passing of Sally this morning.
To clear some immediate questions out of the way, her cancer was advanced, aggressive and incurable. It took her quickly and, although she had discomfort, she was well cared for and died peacefully with husband Rick Hunt, our mother Jan Chamberlain and her oldest brother Mike at her side. This is not fair, this sucks, and we will all be helping each other to move on.
That being said, please consider the family's invitation to join us on Sunday November 9th at Owen Sound's Bayshore Arena at 2 pm for a celebration of Sally's 44 years of fun, laughs and caring. Please wear orange if you can and bring a pumpkin if you'd like to. Orange for her beloved Bruins and Port Elgin Pumpkinfest and pumpkins just because - we'll find a home or homes for them afterward.
Our gal Sal will be dearly remembered and missed by Rick (husband of 13+ years), immediate family (mother Jan, brothers Michael, David and me), her many in-laws, more cousins, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles than you can mention and all of you - her friends.
She is predeceased by many of her relatives, most notably our father Dr. George, and Sally is, I am sure, catching up on some dear relationships as I write.

Letter from Family Continued

Last night I shared a post from her Facebook timeline which touches on how important her community had become to her and how much she appreciated being able to check in on-line (which she did often). Thank you for being there for her.
Over the next while, I or others may, on her behalf, deal with some of the many, many Facebook messages and comments left behind here for Sally. I'll collect any made against this post for Rick and the family. Feel free to friend me or Rick if you have not already so we can stay in touch - any friend of Sal's is a friend of ours.
This picture was taken in 1991 at my wedding. She was equally beautiful yesterday.

The loss of a loved one from Cancer is tragic. This was the disease they said they would cure in five years about 10 years ago. Having lost a mother, a sister and a cousin to cancer I join all of those who grow Giants and tell you that Sally will be missed. Our life's were richer for her presence. Each of us should remember to tell those that are precious to us how wonderful they are. We may not have the opportunity to speak to them in this lifetime before they pass. So many people on this website arte precious to me and I won't list them here but I will tell them as soon as I can that who they are and what they do make life worthwhile. God is now holding Sally and already we miss her!

I am in shock...
I met Sally about 10 yrs ago in Niagara, she was selling the seeds, I remember that I went to look at a seed packet before Sally said that it was "time to start the seed sale", she yelled at me and almost slapped my hand...LMAO! We all had a good laugh!
Rest In Peace Sally and our sincerest condolences to her family.

Take comfort in John 5:28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out." ...I look forward to seeing Sally again.

Even though she was not a pumpkin grower she did a lot for the pumpkin growing community. Her ability to organize and devote long hours to help our cause will be missed. At the Niagara Conventions she would be the last one to leave and the first one setting up in the morning. I was glad to have had the chance to meet her.

Sally kept things running smoothly all those years at Niagara. Enjoyed the many Sunday evening parties she hosted at the Hotel guest room... Her and Jim Kuhn could be heard laughing from several rooms away. RIP my friend, you will be missed by many!

Truly Dave, Sally was very dedicated to pumpkin growers every where. She worked hard to support the convention and was a very vibrant figure at Port Elgin for many years.

I was very fortunate to have worked very closely with her over the years. Hard working members within this community are very difficult to find. Sally's efforts will not forgotten.

Thank you Sally for being a model person to who did whatever it took to get things done and to your love of pumpkins and the people who grew them. Even though we havent been able to attend the Niagra event for a while I have some very special memories of seeing your smiling face and genuine pleasure of seeing me and the many other growers when we would register. Like Christy H. mentioned the "shocking news" of your passing was and is truly shocking and sad. I will always think of you when a seminar or any other pumpkin event is ran because of like I said how genuine you were when greeting the people. RIP and growZ em big in heaven.

I hope that there is some sort of an award that could be given out each year in her honor to someone who puts forth the dedication and hard work for a club or GPC or something of that nature. I think that would be a very fitting way to honor her with something like that.

I was fortunate to attend the memorial service for Sally at the Bayshore Community Centre in her home town of Owen Sound Ontario yesterday. What a fitting tribute by 300 to 400 people from all walks of life. Pumpkin people, Bruins fans, friends and of course family. We were treated to learning about those private things we did not know about her. All agreed it was too soon for such a vibrant person and she will be missed by all. Dave
