Has anybody grown out the seeds from a Prizewinner Hybrid? If so, did they produce true to the parent?

Glenna Rea would be the person to talk to. She has grown Prizewinners for quite some time.

I have grown outcrosses before and none have grown true to the parent seed. The results vary depending on the cross. I haven't grown Nanas Prizewinner cross but I am familiar with it. I suspect the resulting progeny would be less uniform in shape, have great color and a whole truckload of added size potential.

Sometimes seed companies will advertise their seed as hybrid to discourage people from planting seed from the resulting fruit. I am looking for those that have specifically grown the seed from the Prizewinner Hybrid.

Mike, Since the Prizewinners I grow are all open pollinated, I do not collect and plant the seeds. The original seeds I purchased have lasted me several years, since I just grow 4 or 5 plants each year. Several years ago I did a controlled pollination with an AG. Of the resulting seeds, I plant a couple each year. The pumpkins are consistantly round, bright orange, approximately 100-300 lbs, with about 5 pumpkins per plant.

Thanks. I think there's a good chance the Prizewinner Hybrid offspring seeds would produce true to the parent.

If you plant the seeds that where selfed from the parent the F1 seeds would be identical. But some segregation may occur after the F1 generation if you continue to self.
