With a lot of pumpkins going light from certain seeds, is it the seed that makes a pumpkin go heavy or the grower and how they prep their soil and take care of them over the growing season??

There are many growers who grow plants right next to each other with the same soil nutrients, the same weather conditions and the same care and have some go light and some go heavy. That leads me to believe that genetics play a pretty big roll in it. That happened to me this year I had two plants right next to each other that were put into the ground within a few days of each other. 1 went 11% heavy and the other went 8% light.
In addition you can look at certain seeds and see that there is a consistency in weather they throw heavy or light. For instance, the 1495 Stelts has been grown 89 times and only 7 of those went light. Of those 7, 3 were at -1%, 1 was at -2%, 2 were at -3% and 1 was at-6%. Even when they did go light it wasn't by much and was probably within the margin of error for measuring discrepancies. I think its pretty safe to say that there is such a thing as heavy genetics.

Temperatures, water and genetics. If you want to grow heavy every year grow a 1495 Stelts or something like that.

I can say with out a doubt.. It's all genetics.... See team Gantner/Bird.... Heavy .. Heavy... Heavy... Light .. Light... All kins grown in same soil.. Same everything.. I had 17% heavy and the one behind it went light.. Like 5 to 8 % ... Same drench program.. Etc.... Just genetics

I'm with carl on this one, genetics are a piece of it but by no means all of it.

Its your calcium & boron plus the first 3 weeks of fruit development if you miss waterings at this time its bad.The kin is developing its wall thickness at this early stage of growth.Just my not so humble opinion.

personally i could care less about % heavy.Very simply put you need inches and by the look of this years results the whole pumpkin growing world is going to need about 500 inches to beat Beni Meier!!!!!!!!!!
