Hey, I hear tell one has to prune off the tips of vines in order to get more energy to kin, but what about loss of Photosynthesis? Any truth to all of this? John H Appleton

Its a fine line between getting enough leaf surface to feed the pumpkin and growing too much plant and not enough fruit. Everyone has their own preference. For me I don't get early morning or late evening sun so I go for a little more plant. But when you get flooded it doesn't matter.

Yes, No, Maybe, LOL,LOL. I've thought alot about this lately with melons. It seems when I deadhead the vines all it does is create more demand for the plant to concentrate energy at the point of the cut thus taking away energy from the fruit be it melon or pumpkin. Seems to me the plant has to work twice as hard as before to replace the cut portion. Also it appears that the plant puts out twice the growth to compensate for the damage that has inccured from deadheading, again pulling more possible growth from the fruit.

John, in a nutshell, YES. If you eliminate Leaf surface you are eliminating Photosyn processing at any level of degree no matter how small or large. Pretty big nutshell huh? Sorry for the prior hooplah.

Not sure this will help or not but... we had a freeze here the first of Sept that killed most all the vine tips. Pumpkin growth slowed wayyy down and now there's new secondary vines growing out everywhere!
