I see a lot going lite this year.Fast & big seems to get a lot of air bubbles.I have had my share of those,My 1478.5 Jackson Reed was taping like 1630lbs in 2011.This year that same OTT would be 1562 lbs.I think the chart is getting much better. But Here is the big BUTTT!Dont blame the seed entirely I have found in the past 3 years that watering & feeding(soil) is just as important as the genetics.Watering is the hardest part of growing these giants. It needs to be just right. In Bubbas not so humble opinion.Good Luck to AWL!!May your World record be 1 lb smaller then mine.LOL

I have no proof, but the abundance of green house, or at least plastic tunnel big ones seems to correlate (sp), like you said, fast and big.

BTW, wanted mind you sharing your watering secret. Even if it is just to me...LOL

In Colorado we see the majority of pumpkins that go to the scale go light. Day time highs in the 90s and nights in the low 60s to high 50s seem to be the main problem. Temps have been more mild this year so it will be interesting to see if more go heavy but I'm sure weather also effects how heavy a pumpkin will go.

I have some thoughts on this, but don't want to share them until the tailgates are all dropped.

A couple observations from the PAST:

It does seem that much of the time greenhouse fruit don't go heavy (not the case with Beni). It also seems that much of the time the guys that fertilize like crazy go light.

It makes me wonder if some of the fruit that goes heavy might be induced by cooler temps. You wouldn't have much of that in a greenhouse.

if you fertilize in the right way there shouldn't be any reason why they would go light

I don't have any irrigation system, none. Not much in the drench category either. God did up the rain a bit and eased the harsh heat. I certainly don't have much of a fertilizer program, but My PB was double last years PB. Taped 1033lbs, actual 1138lbs. Tailgate down!

etm hits the nail on the head. also --- id rather have a fruit give daily gains in the low fourties or high thirties for a long while than fifties for a week or so.
i do believe that the fifty per day ones (unless thay have a great long taper down ) do not usually go over chart. if anything a tad light?
then again what the hell do any of us really know?--lol

Kathy the screenhouses can be any temp we like.I dont have plastic on the house only when heavy rains come. The screentakes away the harsh sun the plants dont need & keep the insects out.I grew 2 kins last year 7% heavy & 14% heavy. This year they will all go heavy. There is so much to learn about screenhouse's http://worldwidegiantgrowers.com/Screenhouse.html
