I'm a new grower this year but was fortunate to get a good seed from an online auction. I think I have done almost everything right because the pumpkin is huge and keeps growing each and every day. If I had to guess it is about 1600 lbs give or take 100 lbs. I'm using the Team Pumpkin enhanced OTT chart. Is it best to take the pumpkin to Port Elgin or should I hold off for the last weigh off in the year? No idea what to expect or how I am going to get my pumpkin out of my greenhouse without taking it apart.

Nice work Canada! Very impressive to say the least. I would watch it and see if it's still growing at the time of the weighoff. Hopefully it will be even bigger! Congrats.

Congrats on what sounds like a stellar year.

You should be able to chart the growth, and when it is slowing down say 3 lbs a day or less, look at the weigh offs that are coming up in the next week or so. Typically they will grow at least 90-100 days from pollination, here we have gotten up to 127 days.

Find a grower near you, they will help you figure out how to get it out of the patch. And they can help you decide on when to weigh it.

Good Luck!

One thing you can do is look up the weights that's were at the various Ontario weigh offs under the GPC info on the home page of Big Pumpkins and make your decision based on where you have the best chance of winning. You can also take a chance and let get as big as possible if it's still growing and wait for the last weigh off. I'm taking one of mine to Port Elgin so I would prefer if you don't take a 1600 pounder there. LOL just kidding of course. That would be a major accomplishment for a new grower and I would love to see it. Where are you located?

Way to go. I suggest you go to PE. That is where the big ones go every year. If you think you have a new record then you might as well compete against the biggest ones in Ontario. We look forward to seeing it. Good luck.

What I do if the pumpkin is too heavy to move yet I want an official weight is carefully cut it into manageable size pieces. Load into trailer and reassemble on a skid at the weighoff. Use dowels to hold it together then just subtract the weight of the dowels. Cheers.

I call BS on this post. If you are not going to tell us where you are how could we help you get the pumpkin harvested. I'll help anybody if you're near me to get a pumpkin to a weigh off even if I know its bigger than mine. First post, generic name, vague location, no reply = BS.
BTW PickeringChris that's some great advice. I'll try that with my Long Gourd that broke off the trellis.

Sorry to hear about that John. We lost a couple a few years back like that & it really sucks to see them lying there in pieces. We hope you get another one to go that big. Good luck.

PS. I'm kind of curious on who & where the Cdn Grower is also.

Whoa there Pumpkin Shepherd. I'll see you at Port Elgin. As for moving the beast I met a grower at the West Niagara Fair this past weekend. He takes his pumpkins to New York where there is better prize money. But I'll settle on $3,000 if I am so lucky.

I wasn't showboating. Maybe a bit excited by my first year growing luck. Maybe Niagara climate. But one guy calls me a b s er and another makes a stupid post about cutting up the pumpkin. You won't find Americans acting like this.

This is my first year growing and I have been working pretty hard in the patch and will be lucky to push 500lbs out of one and maybe 200lbs out of 2 others that started late in the season.

I have family in the Niagara region and am down there a fair bit. Let me know where your at and will lend a hand. We will be down in the next couple of weeks and would be happy to come by and take a look! how does one send a message on this forum?
best of luck.

Wow, I'm so sorry for calling you a BSer. I'll apologize to you in person at Port Elgin. I'll be the slightly overweight, middle-aged guy with an ugly pumpkin in a pickup truck. I assume you should be easy to find. See you there!

CdnGrower, Good reason to be beside yourself! Due to excessive sandbagging on here, having a rookie chime in with some Astounding numbers (story), gets the natives a bit restless! No two ways about it, pictures now, pictures at whatever weight offs you attend. Amazed you are so concerned about the payoff money!?! Yeah, we'd like to hit some good money, but as a newbie, I'd be looking to weigh near the folks who helped me the most, besides, the grin on my face would be worth a couple hundred anyway!

I can't wait to see how this turns out! I know John can grow. I traded him a 1381 Swarts a couple of years ago which he grew a 1386 lb beast off of! It will be amazing if a new grower has a Canadian record. Time will tell, tail gate drops and all that stuff!

We look forward to meeting you on the Sat. CdnGrower. With a monster like that, your sure to draw a crowd. We aren't going to be a threat to you this year, but I'm sure there will be someone out there that might be. Good luck to ya.

Any chance on a picture of this wonderful kin?? And what plant / seed are you growing with?? and what Male pollination did you use?

Guys no disrespect to Ontario growers but I'm taking my pumpkin to the Great Pumpkin Farm in NY on Oct 5th. It's way closer than Port Elgin for me plus the prize money is huge compared to what is offered at Pumpkinfest. I honestly don't know why more Ontario growers don't go to weigh-offs in the USA.

Sandbaggers,HH's hiding behind the keyboard reading every word but no time for a diary..lol It should all be good while in competition mode as far as i'm concerned
