i'm trying to set an extra pumpkin on a plant for a genetic cross... but the main sink is the big pumpkin already on the vine- anyone have any tricks to encourage a second set on a plant? all the ones i have tried abort, and i'm running out of time....

if you have a well rooted secondary you might be able to cut it from the main plant and grow your genetic pumpkin on that seperate plant(secondary).i would do this a few days before the pumpkin opens to reduce stress and possible abort.

Pick a tertiary that comes off the end of a secondary that it well rooted. Pollinate the female on the tertiary and then cut the secondary about 4 leaves in off the plant. That will do it. I have three plants I did that on so far this year and they are all growing well now.

look for a nice strong tert on a secondaries furthest from stump late in season. roots are younger. find a pop up tert that has a nice connection....some can be lots of growth from an attempted earlier pruning with a sliver still growing. find a good tert on the youngest secondary and locally foliar feed the bottom leaves over 8" on the pop up tert its on and also drench along the secondary the tert is hooked on.....use a 3-18-18 or similar. late season chugging from big ones combined with rain we have had means p and k uptake needs a localized kick? this would be my approach in your scenario for what its worth
