nothing except bio or chemicl treatment will help an aling(unhealthy) pumpkin however,a healthy pumpkin will be back fed nutrients from everywhere on the plant. its been proven by growers who continue to get good weekly gains off pumpkins that have had most and sometimes all the plant before the fruit removed. thatrs why growth off the main past the pumpkin is so important.

That isn't what I would call unique, as that is the situation of most any plant that I know of. To relate the ater and raw nutrients flow down the main vine (central highway) and flow out to the secondaries (the back streets) and then to the leaves. The leaves then transport the byproducts of photosynthesis (simple sugars) back down from the leaf through the vine wherever it is needed. These sugars are needed most for the growing pumpkin once the leaves are mature and do not need extra nurturing in order for them to develope. So, the plant after the pumpkin does, as Pap said, "back feed" to the pumpkin.
