I have a pumpkin (1107 Zunino) that appears to have a LOT of tension in that the slightest touch causes a big split to shoot across the surface. It's the second time its happen on this kin and also happened on the culls after they were removed.

Posted picture to diary which should be up soon.

Anyone else experienced this before?

I think even giving it an iffy look may cause it to crack up

Baitman, thank you for stating the obvious. I too, was under great pressure restraining myself from making that same suggestion.

Dandytown, on a serious note; is the cracking just in the skin, or does it run deep?

Yep, really smooth and hard. Sounds odd to describe but when it splits you can 'hear' the tension being released.

Without probing it looks like it's cracking to about a depth of 5 mm. I guess I'll know more when I cut it open (hopefully in October).

Not that I want it to spit again but I'll try and video it next time I have reason to get all touchy feely. Just to catch it on camera if anything.

dandy just avoid touching it.was there any type of sprays applied to the fruit during the season that might make that happen?

That happened last year my 2009 Wallace. The skin was really soft I touched it and it cracked 18 inches across the top.Mu nitrogen was all over the place,I believe that was the cause I posted pics on my 2013 Diary it would of been mid July.

That's exactly what I'm talking about Mark!

Other than about 20 lbs of fish, blood and bone over the 400 sq ft patch in spring that's about the only nitrogen the plant has seen. No sprays whatsoever.

Hmm..soil test!

Its a slowwwwwww ride! 8oC lows at night, 17oC 'highs' in the day, growth on everything barely registers 1-2" in 24 hour.

bubba nitrogen does make scence as even when appliedto a plant the vine tips get erected and brittle.erected---lol
