I don't buy the growth at nite theory. Look at the size of Dale's pumpkins, he has real short nights up there. Those pumpkins could only get that big when he's looking the other way.

Mine have always grown at a steady pace here with no difference in night or day. I am only in sun about 4 hours a day average May -Sept, so it might have something to do with the plant being so heavily shaded.

During the ten days this season when I was able to measure at both 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., I found that approximately 70% of the growth occurred during the "night half" of each 24 hours. Not sure if any of the heavy hitters have thoroughly documented this phenomenon. Next year, can someone have a 'kin growing on a scale with software that plots the weight every five minutes? I would pursue such a thing, but that's out of my budget at the moment.

I have to agree with Claremoron. Mine seem to grow more in the night half of the 24 hours.

Most outward growth happens at night (low light) and they are still growing a little during the AM hours. At day 30 if I measure at 6:30 AM and then again at 9 AM, there is usually a difference of 3 inches OTT during that time frame. Then from 9AM until evening there hardly any noticeable outward growth in my patch. However, temperature has a large effect on this, and when temps drop very low, there is hardly any noticeable growth even over night until it warms up. This is why you hear us talk about them blowing up on a "warm day after a cold night". I have been doing some tracking of growth and nightime temp this year so I have a pretty good handle on growth.
