Penny a pound pumpkin promise! Fellow growers, After attending a charity event this weekend, I started thinking about our great world wide community estimating at 300,000 or more growers. What I am proposing is that each and every one of us pledge or search for pledges to donate one (or more) pennys for every pound our largest pumpkin's final weight is after it is weighed to your charity of choice. If every grower were to donate just $4 that would be well over one million dollars. Please post your promise below and let's see what a difference we can all make! Thank you!

Very nice idea John. Now that I am retired I spent a lot of time and energy on my community groups. We all should contribute to the communities that support us. Last year when I brought my 828 back form the Vancouver weigh off I dropped it at a local building supply here on the island (they have a fork lift). It was done as a silent auction, a clip board at the front desk, starting at a penny a pound. We only got to 6 cents a pound but that's better then having it go to my poultry to eat, plus I didn't have to carry it up the hill! The funds raised went to youth sports. I let the store decide the charity. This brought a little attention the the local farmers and growers and some free advertising for the business plus a family got a huge jack-o-lantern real cheap. WIN WIN WIN My 650 and 550 from our local fair went to our largest local grocery store. We do this every year, they are real community players. I am on the board of the local abattoir society, a struggling non-profit trying to help local farmers survive, and we got a check for $500! Those pumpkins were on display for several weeks outside the store. Very fun. Every community will have businesses that would love to do this. Again, nice idea.

How did you arrive at an estimate of 300,000 growers?
