Has anyone ever had early-on issues with the kins on their 1059 v/m plants? All of the kins on my plant have extremely short, very (VERY!) thick stems. By a few days old the kins are nice and round and plump but the stems seem to grow rapidly thicker within a few days old. Because of this stem thickness; the stems are showing signs of small splits at a very young age and some of them travel down the stem and into the skin of the pumpkin which is eventually cause for termination of the pumpkin because as it grows, the injury just keeps getting bigger.
My 1059 plant itself has extremely large vines on it. They are very rigid and by far the thickest vines on any plant I have in the patch. They are so thick that they will snap off at the slightest stress.
Is this a common problem with this seed or am I just having bad luck? :)
I will try and get some photos to put in my diary tonight

I grew my best lookin ever off a 1059 in 2011. I didn't have those issues, but the 1059 stem developed a rot later on which turned into a weekly surgery and 24/7 fan. Refer to the 2011 diary for pics of the stem.

Sometimes I get plants like that. It is just the luck of the draw. I don't think it is anything you did. I had a 1290 Poirier just like that a few years back. Also back in 2007 I had a big and orange seed do the same thing. (I can't remember what seed it was.)

I had a weeping stem on a 1059 3 years ago from August thru September, but no crack or split. Sulfur and a fan on the weeping area kept the problem from getting serious.

one going now, plant/ leaves are small and so is pumpkin, prob around 350 lbs but it's nice orange and good shape except blossom end is sunk in. Plant has disease issue as some leaves are dying. Was pollinated with 2032 if she holds up!

Grew the 1187 Johnson last year which was a selfed 1059 VG. All pumpkins on the plant had very short stumpy stems. Lost a beautiful one on day 20 to a stem split that ripped into the cavity

Sometimes the seed and sometimes genetics as is the case with my 874.8 Geyelin which is being grown by a half a dozen growers.
In each case the 874 stem splits and most I believe are short thick stems. Fortunately only 1 loss though due to a stem split.
