worried that is will brake off. any idea to prevent that?

Cut off the vine roots at least 2 nodes on each side if the pumpkin and block the vine up with Styrofoam. That might prevent a problem. Next year make sure you do that early enough in the season. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=225302 shows how I did it and have the stem pretty much straight. You can see that I may have a problem with positioning it on the curve in the vine, due to late set too close to the drainage ditch after the flood. But if needed I can cut the vine at the pumpkin and keep 90% of the plant.
