From what I've seen in past years most blossom splits occur after a good size rain storm followed by warm / hot sunny days . The blossom is the thinnest / weakest part of the shell . Pretty much see it happen to one or more every year .

The most common cause is probably a growth surge from a sudden increase in water. I think wheel shaped fruits are more prone to it because all rapid growth seems to stretch the blossom end more. Some fruit just have thinner blossom ends, too.

Don't let your soil dry down much between waterings. If heavy rain is forecast, water before the storm so the soil isn't dry heading into the growth surge.

And if your plants are splitting because you have 50-60 lbs a day growth, then just remember, if you ain't blowing them you ain't growing them!

Good question, mine have split 3 years in a row. It has nothing to do with water here since it was dry climate each time and steady irrigation.. I've added dolomitic limestone and gypsum each year to build up calcium. I attribute it to deformed lobes this year.

I think there are multiple causes; growth surge due to rain defiantly but we had consistent rain late june and throughout july. Growth was not excessive in mine but rather poor shape--> asymmetric blossom end that sucked in day 16-18 and then split day 19-24. Also cool nights warm days will cause younger fruit to expand contact and I think that primes the pumpkin to split.
