The 2009 is a great seed and has done great things and I have to say I would grow it again. Mine however has decided to split all the pumpkins 18-25 days old. Each and every female has grown a crooked lopsided blossom end that is apparent early on (day 5-8) well before the cavity forms based on dissection of my culls. As the cavity forms it opens up along the lobes right through the blossom.
Has anyone had consistent problems with their 2009 or any other seed lines where the sure thing just did not happen?

Ours is having very slow growth rates. At day 50, ours is only taping at 240" OTT. We have set another on the main that is @ 12 days now. It is growing well, but are really out of time to get a big one. This plant will get minimal treatment for the remainder of the season while we tend to our other plants 1st. Having night-time temps this summer @ 48-52 degrees F doesn't help either. Good luck all. Jane & Phil

farmergal, initially I thought rain may be the issue but none of the pumpkins grew quickly. they were all 25-28in day 10 and 60-65 in day 20. Only a little fish and soluble kelp was used at probably 1/2 strength. 1 application of TKO more as a fungicide than fert. Plus there are a lot of secondary's still growing to buffer a growth surge and there are still 4 more sets growing. had a lot of Ca via gypsum and chicken manure. Blossum was easily 3 in thick. But it opened in line with the seed lobes as the cavity expanded and pulled the 3inches apart.
I think this plant is throwing funky shaped fruit and as they expand the cavity does not open evenly and pop.

Maybe the cold temps. the tissue is less flexible (same as vines that snap when cold) warmer night time temps may allow for the pumpkin to flex.

I am probably one of the few people out there to grow six plants of the same seed I the same patch in a single year. Of the six 811s, one failed to set a fruit, one fell to YVD, one split at 780 day 36, one grew only wheels, one made it to scale at 680, and the 6th grew the biggest plant I have ever grown. Every pumpkin blew up on this plant, even side vines. Crazy, explosive blow outs. My water is automated and all other conditions are equal amongst my plants. So clearly some seeds of the batch can be programmed to self destruct. Like a problem child so to speak.
