Why don't you set a piece of plywood under the pumpkin when it's small and use some nylon straps to lift the giant onto a pallet when it's time to pick & load ...'

For transport to the weigh off many growers put a cushioning layer between the fruit and the plywood on top of the pallet. I've seen styrofoam, memory. Foam, shag carpeting, etc.

with out plywood or foam it may be possible for the pumpkin to grow into the pallet slots and you would have to damage the pumpkin to get it off

I grew on a pallet last year. I put a rubber mat on top of the pallet and then sand. You can get the rubber stall mats off craigslist or I got mine at Tractor supply for cheap.
