The longer you wait the worse the recovery.

I wouldn't say that...I just wouldn't wait til you are immobile ... It's a pretty amazing surgery and you'll be walking around very soon afterwords..the doc will let you know when u can use a tiller again...

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

72 year old lady down my driveway had it done 3 weeks ago....I caught her in my patch wandering around on her cane looking at the pumpkins! I said: "Miss EDIE what in the hell are you doing??!!" She said: 'checking on these babies of course, I've been gone three weeks."
LOL
True story.

I worked in ortho @ the hospital for many years.Unless you have a problem you need to move within the quidelines they give you.In the hospital work with the Dr. and nurse. After the surgery you work with the Dr. and physical therapy.Physical therapy is very important and they will work with you to accomplish your goals and give you suggestions for any questions. The more motivated you are the better the results.

I had my left knee replaced January 16th of this year. My surgeon told me many people made a dramatic recovery after 6 months. He was right. If you do what you're told to do, keep moving, and rest before you are in great pain, you will recover within a year of surgery.

Check out my question and the answers earlier this year:

One guy I know was on an African hunting safari about a year after his second knee replacement. One of my sisters had both of her knees replaced and said it was the best thing she ever did. I'm just waiting until my orthopedist says my left knee is worn out enough for replacement. Take Kolache's advice, she knows what she is talking about and worked with some very good doctors.

Owen , make sure to ask the Doc about how long the knee replacement is expected to last under normal conditions plus IF a second replacement can be done on the same knee if need be years down the road .

I work with a lot of veterans. Many rave about their knee or hip replacements. There are always a few who have complications. No surgery is without risks. There are also health risks to doing nothing and being inactive due to pain.

Thank you all very much for the further input, it is greatly appreciated. I retired this year and this is not how I expected the first year to go, worried a bit but your advice and sharing has helped. Will have the surgery in October, hope to be able to plant next year.

Owen O: Have a few people close by you can ask for help when you need it. Keep exercising, try to rest before you hurt too much, and have a support group handy of people who have had the surgery.

PS: Kneeling on the operated knee will NOT help it heal faster. Been there. Done that. lol
