Here is a tv show called Nature What plants talk about
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG0ZN8A-8Uo
it is also on netflicks, I thought it was interesting, I am not sure if they used good testing methods, they may have been better off camera.
One thing that could pertain to pumpkins is that some plants have roots that compete for space with other plants that are not in their direct family.
If I understood it right, and if pumpkins do this then say two 2009 wallace plants would share space with each other, but a 2009 and a 1546 Shenoha would compete for space.
There are quite a few theories they have on other matters and plants on how and why they "talk"

I shudder to think where this thread is heading! The possibilities are nearly endless. My three pumpkin plants would tell a tale of a completely devoted 'human slave' that tends to thier every need, but knows so little of what they really want. However, what they don't yet know is what will happen to them come early October!

There has been a lot of research about root and shoot competition, especially in rice. It seems as though yield is certainly related to below and above ground biomass. A lot of the research I have read is about weed competition reducing yields. Your example of the 2009 and a 1546 isn't necessarily correct in that they are the same species. Although some species are hastened to mature when exposed to any competition and so this can reduce yield and fruit size. There is probably a lot more research being done on this. I'm hoping my kin is saying, "Out of way!"

in the video they speak of the sea rocket plant that the parent plants and siblings are recognizing each other , they dont try to over take each other by their roots, but if the same species from a different "family" come together the roots will expand over each other looking for food it starts about the 38 minute mark of the video.
at around 48 minutes. They exposed a douglas fur to radioactive carbon and then tracked it with a geiger counter after a few days as it passed through fungi in the soil to another tree, but this seemed to happen to fast to me.
