I have a plant that tends to have seeds in the blossom. The first flower was a jumbled mess, so I removed it. The next one had one slightly lifted lobe and one small "packet" of seeds. This flower was on the main. A couple of days later I pollinated a female about 8" onto a secondary almost as far out as the other. The secondary is not as hefty as the main. This flower had no lifted lobes and not seeds. The fruit on the main appears to have taken. Which one should I go with? thanks

Kathy , the 675 we grew back in 1991 ( photo is on MePGO web site ) was one of those about 1 foot onto a secondary so don't think a secondary cannot produce .
That was almost 25 years ago and with AG seeds with so much more potential today .........

Thanks guys. You drowning yet Al? Today I pollinated in the pouring rain. I tried keeping the pollen and the females as dry as possible. Charlie needs to turn off the taps!

Kathy, with it getting late into the season for pollinations it might not be much of a disadvantage to set a fruit on the secondary, sets on secondaries usually grow much quicker for the first 30 days or so than main vine fruits do. Since you're essentially looking at a shorter growing season with a later pollination date the quick early growth on a secondary might be better than the longer term growth of main vine sets. If you get a good pollination on the secondary I'd go with it. I grew a pumpkin in 2011 that was pollinated in late July, the 24th if my memory is correct, on a secondary that made it over 900 lbs.

thanks Kevin and Kurty. I am definitely pollinating the secondaries. On secondary was a vine as big as a main. I am really hoping that one takes. Al, I thought that I could bury some vines tonight, sure enough, we got more rain.
