Should i be burying the main vine to promote root growth or leave it lose and moveable for the growth of the pumpkin?

Do you mean the vine next to the pumpkin? If so, then no, you should not bury them, as those vines need to be loose so that they can move up with the growing pumpkin. I know that there are those growers who will put a pot full of soil under the roots next to the stem just to get that extra pound (literally), but I personally would refrain from even doing this, as there is always a risk of scratching the pumpkin or breaking the vine.

But of you mean the vines in general, then you can bury those. Just make sure that there is plenty of slack in the main vine for the pumpkin ro grow upwards of two feet.

It'll root itself at each node unless growing on concrete. Burying helps anchor until it roots and also takes advantage of a 2nd tap root at each node that comes out the top. That one doesn't always see dirt unless you bury. Sometimes it'll grow inches out and dip down on own. You'll have to cut the tap roots close to the pumpkin once it gets of size and elevate the main vine to be the height of the pkn stem.

Leave it loose. Once the fruit starts to get big, you'll just have to unbury the vine before the fruit. After the fruit(and before the fruit), leave some slack and support the vine using foam blocks or what have you. You don't want any tension on any part of the main vine.
