My 1985 plant is very sensitive to heat. Anything above 80° cooks my newest growth. I've been trying a few things short of total shade to prevent the leaves from burning but only having marginal success. Anyong else growing the 1985 having this issue or is this unique to my 1985?

My 1985 is doing fine under 40% shade Cloth. However with all the Cold weather out here, The plant is just approaching 10 feet. Big leaves. Shade Cloth makes all the differenCe.

Vince, my 2009 is doing this as well. Very frustrating seeing some of these beautiful leaves get fried! I ordered some 17'X 4' shade clothes. I have them running at an angle from the back secondaries all the way up the plant. Big pain in the buttttt,,,, but all new growth is looking amazing.
Us guys with small areas can't afford to lose leaves.

I'm sure it's not a watering issue. Watering is done automatically through drip tape throughout the day. I am growing under about 400 sqft of 30% shade cloth and the new growth is doing ok under that just barely. Some leaves have burned under the shade cloth. The plant is getting close to the total area of my shade cloth and many of the secondaries have already reached the edge of my covered area and are now several feet out in the full sun. Thats where I am really taking damage. I am spray misting the newer growth out in the full sun every 15 minutes for 2-3 minutes each time but it still wants to burn. Adding more shade cloth isn't an option for the part of the plant that is out in full sun because of location.(my driveway) Chris, we haven't had hot weather yet!!! It might get ugly. Except for the burning issue the 1985 is a beast! Everything is large on this plant and it grows very fast. The main is beyond 20 feet. One female has already opened (not in the keeper position)and two more will open in the next week.

No we haven't Vince. The weather has been absolutely perfect here so I don't know what my excuse is:) I visited Kevin Smiths patch Friday and his 1985 is a beast! Secondaries are like my main vine. Its the only plant in his patch that isn't burning. I guess it comes down to each seed and the genetics being slightly different.
I vote you tell the wife the driveway is going to be off limits for the next two months and you install shade over the whole area:)

We got the heat up here in Sacramento right now, Ive got misters coming on every half hour and the 1985 Miller is still getting burnt leaves. Other than that this plant is doing awesome.

My 1985 Miller is doing great, it's 93 degrees and my misters are on for 30 seconds every 3 minutes. No scorched leaves on the Miller, but my 1455 in the same patch is getting leaf scorch on some of the secondaries.

Great plant but the newest leave are getting scorched. Only two of my plants in the patch are not getting scorched. I mist but I guess not enough.

Haven't seen temps much above 80's till today but mine seems to do fine so far. However I did discover the main broken in two places four inches apart. Fortunately the breaks are past a set female that's set at twelve feet. There's a secondary coming off by the set that's already taking over as the new main.

Every year I have issues with leaf burn. Starting in June our temperatures are always in the upper 80's - 100's. I've watered by drip line before but this year I've switched to overhead. They come on 3 times during the day and as of right now I have no leaf burn but we're just starting to get into the really hot weather so I can't say for sure that it is working but so far so good.
Also, I don't use any shade cloth.

My 1985 Miller is doing great (so far) my 2032 Mathison looks pretty sad after a hot day, but hanging in there. My Porter plant is under a tree and shaded part of the day, so it's spared some of the heat.

It is interesting to see how different plants can be that come from the same seed stock. I increased misting time to 3 minutes on every 15 minutes and it seems to be working ok, but not perfect. I may have to consider shade cloth over the driveway when we hit the 90's. Chris, Kevins plant sounds alot like mine. The secondaries are as large as the mainvines of some of the plants I've grown in the past. The only downside to my plant is the heat tolerance. The second pumpkin on the main will be pollinated tomorrow.
