1) does a bear shit IN the woods 2) does Howdy Doody have wooden balls 3) does a one legged duck swim in a circle 4) do lobes matter
I refrain from answering, but I lean towards yes.

But a well placed 4 lobe is money over a 5 lobe in the far stretches - good luck!

Has there ever been a two lobe? Are the Kennedy's gun shy? Are American kids fat? Does a captive bear shit? Does a Polar bear piss on ice? Does a wooden horse have a wooden dick?

The number of lobes means nothing to me. Shape, position on the vine, and plant size are all I consider.

Andy S and Orangeneck have given you the best answers. There is at any rate a correct answer, I do not know what it is, but it is for sure almost none of the above.
The whole idea is to get the best wieght possible out of the pumpkin. Wether a 3, 4, or 5 lobe pumpkin will do this is beyound my knowledge, has anyone ever done a study?
The real question for me is what are the functions of the lobes? My guess is that they are responsible for growing the seeds, as well of course of letting the pumpkin know it has been pollinated.
I think your question is a very good one, and I would hope for the respect of this website that it gets a better answer then wooden nuts.

this comes up every year and from what i have seen after growing about 50 or so kins is lobes dont matter at all. ive grown a couple threes and one six and size, shape, seed count all varible By pumpkin not by lobes so if its there is a pollination where you want it take it can always be culled later if you prefer another.

Just an observation on 3-lobers last year, I had a lot of them late on in the season.

I believe some of the biggest pumpkins have been grown off of 4 lobe females
