I am wondering if the pumpkins tend to set on the side of the pumpkin that gets the most sun? Where I used to live both sides tended to get equal amounts, and they tended to be on either side of the vine Where I live now it has been very consistent when the fruit has been set on the main vine. On one occasion I had to use side vines where the fruit got less sun and it didn't seem to matter. Sorry so long. thanks

Good question. Coincidence or not I have plants going N, S, E & West and all kins are on the southern sides or south west sides favoring the most sun exposure..HMMMM. Wierd!

This year mine set on the north side of the vine. Never gave it much thought, I just want the position to be good.

kathy it does help if your keeper pumpkin lays down toward the outside of the plant rather than the inside. less vines to either move or loose as the fruit grows. very good observation on your part. most likely the shade issue is correct. our patch is full sun all day so we have not encountered this. pap

If this does happen to be true, it might be helpful when you are planning ahead of time how to direct your vines.
