hi,
The main vine has died on one of my plants. Does it matter which side vine I set a pumpkin on? or should it be the one closest to the tip of the dead main? If I have a strong side vine that is not at the tip of the main, should I use that? Thanks!

You can go with either. The strong side vine is a sure bet (this late in the game). Treat the others as secondaries and aim the strong s.v. as the main. If it was earlier in the season I'd use one of the last two side vines.
