Ill be paying closer attention to the shape of the lobeZ on the flowers to deterimine kinda how that pumpkin will look later on... Noticed my 1623 flowers with full lobeZ but looking kinda squatty like my 1623 fruit waZ last year. I remember that flower last year was similar. Hopeing I dont get any twisted lobes this year...for better fruit structure. THoughtsZ?

I agree with you gary.
if you look at shape of lobes you can tell if the basic shape of the pumpkin will be symmetrical, round, square, flatter, one section smaller than the others, pentagon etc.

How can you tell if your pumpkin is going to be a wheel by looking at the lobes? Does it look different than the lobes of a low long pumpkin. Cecil, what do 2000lbs lobes look like. That's the lobes I'm looking for.

I have found that the more lobes the taller the fruit, most 6 lobers will be wheels or birdbaths.

you can tell somewhat from a week old on. round fruit can go either tall and round or wheel or bird bath.(positioning early can help some)tall and round can be a problem for strees while a bird bath offers no stem stress issues. oval fruit is what i really prefer when at all possible. they usually grow with some length and dont have as much hight and therefore dont cause as much stem and vine stress, etc, through out the season.

lol Russ!! In my opinion/observation, lobes show symmetry and the shape that the pumpkin will be side to side (looking at the blossom or stem side.
Length (whether it is a high wheel or a long pumpkin) depends on a side view. As pap said, perfectly round balls have been high pumpkins or wheels for us. Last year was the first long pumpkin we have ever grown. This year guess which shape we are keeping?
