My 1813 plant is the healthiest and biggest I've had to date but I haven't been able to get one to keep on the main. One I pollinated yesterday doesn't look like it took. Has anyone grown anything of size at 25-30 feet out? I have one last female opening around 28 feet, and am wondering if should just pull plant and take year off. Thanks

One thing that I have learned is never give up .....I'm not an experienced grower by any means but why not try :). I have read of some growers that have grown big fruit from that footage ...

Pollinate at closer side vine and when it takes, make that your main. I prefer this route over having a pollination sitting at 20 some feet. It seems like the plant has trouble finding the pumpkin when you pollinate that far out. I guess it depends how how big you are hoping for. But, you should have no problem getting one set on a side.

Luke, My 1411 from last year was around 25' out as well as being a late pollination (July 4). Don't think you will see a WR at that distance but you can grow big that far out.

Hang in there Luke... usually takes closer to three days to be able to judge if it may have taken.. and many times longer.

Luke we are playing team wayyyyy out there this year, 1779 iisn't giving up yet, I feel I have the right to give up any time I want to at this point. Once you add down main and around side to where new main is and potential new kin imI'm probably at like 25ft out too

This plant grew so fast almost all secondaries are already terminated until the 20 foot point, so new main\secondary is not an option. I also removed 500 sq feet of patch and turned into yard so space is very limited.
I hope so Steve and Ned. We have been at 95 degrees with +100 heat index the past 2 days, and I didn't have ice on it... new job. It didn't double in size so I think it might be a goner. Best of luck Spence!
CWeibz, that was my motto in '12 and '13 and I ended up with a 400 pounder at best grown on a secondary way out there. It's all or nothing this year...

I would set one at 25 to 30 feet. The reason that the vine is not as strong at 25 or so feet is that most people have a strong fruit growing at 12 feet. All of that plant behind the pumpkin should help to grow a big one.

It didn't take for sure now, so I am stuck with that one over 25 feet. Should open Sunday or Monday and that's all I got.

Pollinate a few on your side vines , you would be surprised the size pumpkin that could grow on a couple of them IF you don't get anything growing on the main . Good Luck .

Don't give up Luke. I had one at 22 feet that grew to 1100. I don't think the extra three feet you have will matter. Keep your fingers crossed. Good luck.

Luke, I am really impressed with the size of your plant already. Especially being that you grow in the shade!

Thanks guys, I am pollinating a chewed up one on a secondary this morning. It grew outside the chicken wire. Still looks healthy. I switched brands of Mycos and other beneficials this year and the root growth is insane under the canopy.
