My concern with the trap.... does it draw in svbs that otherwise wouldn't be near my patch?

What I've been told is that the Atlantic Giants are what lures the SVB to the patch and the traps will sidetrack the males into them. This disrupts the breeding of them. No breeding, no eggs to lay. If you put a SVB trap in the middle of a non pumpkin garden you supposedly won't find any SVB in the traps. Myself, I would use them so I would know when they arrive and when I need to start spraying rather than count on them for control. But apparently you should worry that you are attracting more SVB to your garden by using a trap. They are coming first for the AG's, not the traps.

even before we started growing AGs, we had SVBs destroying yellow squash and zucchini every year. Since we have started growing the AGs, we use merit on the AGs, and the traps in the AG patch, and I have not had a single borer in any plant, but get several in the traps. I think the traps work, and they only draw males, so even if they draw thousands to your patch that wouldn't have otherwise come, they aren't hurting anything in the bottom of the trap dead.

I'll second Pumpkin Shepherd. I've placed SVB traps out in the middle of a hay field several hundred yards from my patch and never trapped an SVB. The traps in my patch caught plenty during the same time frame.
