i need to pick between a 1544 reveir, and a 1894 mathison.
i damaged a cot leaf at germ on the 1894, it seems healthy, but has a wider more flat vine than the 1544, they are both in the ground and starting to vine out, the 1894 seems to handle heat a little better, doesnt seem to be a double vine, but its not as round as the 1544 what should i do?

Hard choice. No matter what you do,half way through the season you think you made the wrong decission.I've had flat vines like that before and got more round as plant grew out 8 feet.
Too bad you can't keep them both.Go with your gut.
Best of luck!

If you can delay culling one till the mains are 4 or 5 feet long, your choice will be much easier.

Listen to Cojoe. If just starting to vine, give it a week. Way too early to tell for sure.

I am growing the 1544 revier myself and is an aggressive growing bugger. It is at 7 ft long now and has a female on already. The revier has had 42 pumpkins over a thousand pounds already and I think if you have a revier your chances are pretty great to go big.So I say keep the revier.I plan on crossing mine with the newer genetics of a 1478 Scherber (220 Debacco x 1655 Ford which is pure freak.

i have 2 plants that are 2 feet apart, with the mains going in opposite directions.is there enough room for both of them to grow and not be limited because they are close?thanks.

I'm with you So Cal and Patchmaster,
Keep the 1894. This is one of a group that will be in big demand in a year or two. Just watch and see what happens with its offspring. That Revier is a good seed but there's so much 1800lb.+ potential in the 1894.

given your location, heat tolerance seems the obvious choice to me, but if there is something that you are worried about, about that plant, weigh that concern and watch them for the next day or two and make a choice

Look for
growth rate
color
leaves drooping, or cupped up
is it laying down and going straight or twisting and trying to raise up to the sky?

then don't second guess your choice.

If there is room, keep both till you set one pumpkin on each. Then carefully remove the weakest plant.
