How do you get good short stocky seedlings? I know they need light so they don't stretch out but is there any other tricks to the trade? I heard putting a fan on them to help stiffen them up helps

Best thing, and only thing, I found is sun light from the time they start to push dirt up. It also has eliminated those funny looking first leaves that are deformed with crumpled edges.

I've never had seedlings look like they could be in the NBA or a ZZ Top video, and the best for me to keep them short with no "leg", is to keep the light close (fluoro won't get too hot). Raise it every couple days as seed grows.

also cooler at night like in nature helps. If its dark, then cool (not cold) so they wont grow. But both dave & luke are 100% correct.
