It is that time of year lets list things that you should never do, or should do.
#1 never use a sprayer that has been used with a Broad Leaf Herbicide, in your pumpkin patch.( Have sprayers well marked)
#2 If it is going to get below 40° at night plan on frost
#3 Only use recommended amount of product a little is good, a lot will kill your plant

Aways vent your cold frame during the day, even if it is supposed to be cloudy and rainy all day.

Mow the cover crop before tilling in- otherwise it winds all up in the tines causing much swearing.

agree with LB (oh, that´s a rhyme), always mow the cover crop (only the cover crop!), that´s the best you can do.

all great suggestions---here is another

8. harden off plants properly before setting out in patch.
the longer they are inside the more they need cooling off at night. same with sun. a few hrs a day at first or they can get as much damage as a cold night.

If you use fish based fertilizers, make sure neighborhood cats and raccoons cannot get to your seedlings and dig them up looking for the fish.

never keep a knife in your shirt pocket and lean over your pumpkin when it is small! lol yup, the pointy end found it's way in the fruit and stood straight up. :-D Do pull out knife and treat with fungicide, it is ok with a nice scar.

Good permanent marker labels on your plants.
"Is that my 2009 or my zucchini?"

If you put moth balls around the pumpkin, to keep the mice away, don't let any touch the pumpkin. It will eat a hole right through the skin & set you up for a rotten spot!

Don't ever use homemade compost that is not ready and filled with disease.

Good one Nana!

As soon as you put them in the ground, keep you eyes open for cucumber beetles since they can destroy a plant in 1 day and they can also carry mosaic virus.

When putting the shelter over the pumpkin make sure you do not cut the main with one of the legs. ouch

Carefully inspect your stems every day, both visually and by feeling for soft spots.

Be sure and anchor your hoop house down so a strong wind does not blow it into your plant.

Careful moving your main vine, or it will "snap".

If you use a canopy over your pumpkin, make sure it covers it completely and rain wont splash water and soil on the fruit. Lesson learned.

after placing seedlings in patch ---- place a plastic ring around the new seedling to prevent cut worm damage. ( a three inch piece cut from the top of a one gallon cheap thin plastic greenhouse pot will do)

Do not let your pumpkin seedlings get to close to grow lights or the leaves will wrinkle and turn yellowish on the edges.

My nemesis is the wind so always install your wind breaks and pin down vines even if they're forecasting 100 days of calm.

If you carry a bucket filled with canes around the patch for vine burying, make sure you don't stand it near the vines so it can fall over and snap your main vine off (at the pollinated flower ouch!)

Never use 3mil clear plastic to cover over your hot houses using thick wooden stakes in open area that getting a lot of wind, the plastic will rip!! :(
