Is this fact or fiction? What do you think?

Both. They take small pieces of fact then extrapolate into fiction. The article was clear that it was areas with heavy metals in the soil or water from other sources that we're causing the problem. Then they extrapolate to it is all evil monsanto's fault. Most of these third world agricultural workers are likely to be unable to read the label instructions and probably not taking the necessary safety requirements, nor applying at the proper rates. Illiteracy rates in third world countries is not monsanto's fault. I use a lot of organic insecticides and pesticides that are generally considered safe, but that doesn't mean I'm going to bathe in them! You have to treat all products with respect and follow the product labels. It was roundup that really created the boom in no till agriculture, which is generally seen as the most "sustainable" farming method.

Big multi-national corporations have one goal; maximum profit. So it is to be expected that they will try harder to increase their influence in countries that don't regulate corporations like the USA. As far as roundup being so dangerous, if that were true we would all be dead. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in existence. What glyphosate and GMO crops has done is substantially reduce the use of lots of chemicals that are harmful and persistent in the environment. And they have nearly doubled the average corn and soybean yields in the Midwest over the past 30 years. A lot more people are being fed and food prices remain cheap. I'm not saying that there aren't problems. Some weeds are developing resistance and Bt varieties may be hurting some beneficial insects. We need to closely monitor these products as well as the corporations that sell them, keep the good, and get rid of the bad.
