this being one of the worst winters ever,im curious how much snow has fallen in your area for the entire winter so far, and what would be a normal amount for your area ? im in the metro detroit area and we are now at 91 inches for the season only 2 inches away from an all time record set back in 1881. our normal anual snow fall is only 42 inches !!!how was it in your area ?

Not near a record amount here, but we had continuous snow cover from early December until mid March, For a while it snowed every 3rd day, but never more than 6" at a time. Usually just an inch or two. We never got our usual January thaw, and the one February thaw only just settled the snow pack down a couple inches. I figure the snow prevented much frost in my garden and I'm hopeful for a quick warm-up.

59 inches here. Normal is around 18. We set a new snowfall record this year. Luckily we had on and off thaws so the deepest it ever got was about 18 inches. Lot of below zero and long stretches of below freezing. I want spring and I want it now!!! Can't imagine what it was like for you guys who really got a lot of snow.

Wisdom grower, When you ask Wizzy when it's safe to grow, is your concern the avalanche danger over his patch? A good grower would shovel the snow off of his patch long before he would clear the driveway.

Well I'm about an hour south of Detroit and we probably got 10-12" more then Detroit did so to me it's been a record winter. It was a bonus because I was able to put almost 2000 miles on my snowmobile.

Hey Alan, didn't know you were a snowmobiler, you must have gotten your new crib from Gerry. Pretty cool to see it moved on a skid. We moved some big buildings years ago on skids in the winter.

A couple of years ago we had 144". This year only 6" I've always used overhead sprinklers but might have to go to drip this year because of the drought.

Wixom-grower
We had a crap load of snow this year. Almost double of what we normally get. Not sure of the yearly average, but we blew that number out of the snowblower. We are 4 hrs east of Port Elgin & they get the lake effect snow fall from both lake Huron, G-Bay & Lake Ont (if the wind is from the south). In fact the whole east side of Huron & GB gets hit hard by the lake effect snows. It's also been very cold with many days over -30 C. It just started warming up on the weekend, so Jane put on the snowshoes, went out & spread a bag of humic acid on the patch. Hopefully the dark granular particles will attract the heat & help melt the snow quicker. I feel for the people who live close to rivers & streams this spring. We will likely see many more communities flooded out by the runoff from the snow. Hopefully you'll see your garden soon. Good luck, Jane & Phil

Dear Phil, Jane & all you winter worn growers, While I've quipped from time to time about 'what's snow?', I am concerned for all those who may live in a place that has the potential for flooding from all this accumulated snow and ice. I hope that this spring doesn't become the disaster that it could potentially be. Be safe and enjoy a bountiful growing season.

Thanks phil for that info ! I live 30 minutes from winsor and we never see what happens in canada unless their is a 60 car pile up due to a snow storm. Here in michigan their has been no flooding and the snow is prety much gone now, and the ground has thawed out prety good now. The ice is mainly in the shaded areas. Hope you get the same in canada, a slow thaw and no flooding.

@Brad- no but a tornado touched down near my daughter at Chico. @Wixom- I might get lucky on water restrictions here in the mountains but I'm sure many Ca. growers will have some kind of rationing. On the plus side, some late storms are adding a little more water to the reservoirs.

Wisdom grower, Yeah, I'd like to stick you with that handle! I've decided not to argue with my spell check any more. Hey, I got an email from old rookie in the S.F. South Bay area who said that his area was getting into tight rationing and I have heard that the Sacramento area water will be tightly controlled. I'm not sure about the growers in the southern part of the state. I may be in a pocket community that gets off lightly.
Guy, tornadoes in Calif. weird! I hope nobody got hurt. I hear that So.Cal.grower got another earthquake last Friday. I could handle the ground shaking way before a tornado event!

Wisdom Grower, Glad to hear that you can now see the ground thru the snow, but will it thaw out before July? Apparently I spoke too soon this afternoon about the lack of water conservation in my town. I got home this evening to find out that we have now been asked to reduce water consumption by 15% in a voluntary drought program. So, after some quick calculating, I think if I was to shower only once each month thru the season, I can save the 15% on water usage and still grow some monster pumpkins. I'm still ironing out the details.

The lakes around my place still have 24"+ of ice on them & the region above us (all bush, with many lakes & rivers) still has over 3' of snow in the bush. If the forecasted weather stays warm & we get hit with any heavy rains, then I expect to see some pretty nasty floods here over the next 2 weeks. Not sure what is worse, a drought or a flood, but I'd prefer to not have either one. Good luck to all growers this season. Cheers, Jane & Phil
