There are specific pre emergent herbicides that are for Cucurbit crops(Strategy). Although the average home grower will not have access to them. Most growers use a stirrup hoe by the plant and round up on the edges...Always use a separate sprayer for herbicides only and beware of drift. Never ever ever use a broadleaf herbicide that contains 2-4-D with in a 100 feet of the patch

Weeds are a given and how you control them will be decided by how much effort you are willing to put into it. Personally, I use Roundup on the perimter of the plant and have, at times, use it at a diluted rate beneath the foliage as long as there are no exposed roots such as after a significant rainfall.

Many significant growers consider meticulous weed control an overrated pursuit and I have to agree for the most part. Weeds utilize very few nutrients intended for the pumpkins themselves.

We all love to have meticulously tended plants, but weed control is, for the most part, overrated unless you're dealing with some very serious species.

The species I consider "serious" are Johnsongrass, redroot pigweed, and marestail. Marestail has become Roundup-resistant and can be controlled only by phenoxy herbicides and others which are not conducive to use in a pumpkin patch. Control by pulling only.

My horticulture professor tould me one of the best ways to fight weeds before session is to water your garden like there are plants in it with out the actual plants than till it after weeds start to come up. Than when you plant most of the weed roots have been destroyed.

Corn gluten meal is a pre-emergent control for weeds.
20 pounds of corn gluten meal per 1,000 square feet > at exactly the right time in the spring just before the weed seeds germinate.

The general rule of thumb is to apply corn gluten just as the forsythia plants break into bloom in the North, or the dogwoods begin to bloom in the South.
