Saw this add on the local CL and wondered if the used up Rye would be good for soil? Any ideas or input would be great. Thanks

Here is the add: Two James is the first distillery to open is doors in Detroit since prohibition. We are currently producing a 100% Rye whiskey and as part of the production process we use 1000 lbs of rye per distillation run. We are offering our "Spent Rye Grain Mash" for FREE. It makes great livestock feed or soil amendment. We have worked with a local farmer in the past and he says his cows can't get enough of it. We distill several mashes a week and pump the spent grain into 250 gallon totes that weigh an average of 2300 lbs. If interested please call to set a pickup time. This is a lot of feed or compost for free, we are not interested in giving away small amounts we would like someone to take at least a tote or two.

Just watch out for rats. I added buckets of spent grains to my compost one year and had dozens of rats all over my property. Probably raccoons, possums and other animals too that I never saw.

The fermentation process will use up the carbohydrate portion of the grain, leaving the oil, protein and some minerals. Just like using corn for ethanol. Lots of farmers around here feed the distillers grain to their livestock as it is a high quality protein supplement. It has to be mixed with other feeds. Dried corn gluten meal left over from ethanol production is approximately 10% nitrogen and a natural pre-emergence herbicide. It works great to green up lawns and fight crabgrass if applied at the right time. I don't know what it would do for pumpkins and what the rye equivalent would do.

Derived from grain solubles , when this first came out they said it was left over after the brewing process , I bought some and the jug would expand and spew the contents out, it never stopped doing that in tell it was almost empty.

I complained about it ,got a free jug and it did the same thing, they wouldnt talk to me after that. They stopped selling it for quite awhile , now I see its back.

I really don't know what I would do with a 250 gal tote filled with the stuff. If I could spread it out before I tilled might be ok but wonder if it's worth the time.
