When is the best date to start a giant pumpkin? last year I feel I started them to late at may 15!! This year I have a green house to get going in. Or Pete pods the best or is there a better way two get the plant a little bigger before moving it out side??

I start around 4/15 each year and move outside around may 1st or sooner. I have a little greenhouse I built I use for storms and at night with a flood lamp to keep temps up till mid to late may. By then they are down and ready to take off.

What part of Missouri are you from? I will put my plants out between April 25 and May 3 depending on the weather.

There's quit a few great growers in Santa Rosa, I'm sure one of them will chime in.

Oakwild,
Ask your postman.

Easter Mo could be the Tennessee\Arkansas border or up by Iowa. Even with that temp swing, that should only change start dates by a week at most with some outside structure.

Oakwild,
All kidding aside, your in good company there in Santa Rosa, and even regionally there are many very talented growers.
When to start your plants?;
What's your objective? I'll assume that your growing Atlantic Giants for competition. Do you want to participate in the early season weigh off in your town? Are you planning on weighing in the October events?
You should think about your seed's historical pumpkin maturity period, aim for the date of a given event and plan backwards to a planting date.
Here in Calif., we have a very mild, (and often early) end of winter that allows for planting as early as late march, but more commonly mid April. This is all dependent on when the last frost occurs. You'll definitely need a cold frame or shelter to start early.
