After shipping a 2009 off to another grower yesterday, I was looking through my few seeds left and I think the 1723 Marshall might be my best seed for 2014 given its past results.

I only have room for one plant this year so am asking if anyone had problems with this plant being sterile, prone to splits etc? I just can't risk it with one plant and and am a bit concerned since it was selfed. Dale please weigh in on your opinion too please if you see this.

Thanks

I grew the 1723 Marshal in 2012 which is the 1634 Werner selfed. So basically as Quinn told me the 1723 is the 1634 as far as genetics go.Great plant grew in the same spot Dolly did.It was blowing the other kins away in till August 16th(tear running down cheek) it split. On the anniversary of the day we lost Elvis.(more tears running down face).lol Yep she split just like the seam in Elvis's pants did at the Pontiac Silverdome in Feb of 1977.lol.My MOM came home and told me all about it.lol I was 16 at the time.lol Great seed I would grow it again if I had more space. She went heavy taped 880 weighed 980lbs.I have seeds from Yukon the 1723 X 1161 Rodonis Great cross!

Mine was a great grower before it BES which I think was pretty common that year from the 1723.

I grew one last year, but I think I got too much nitrogen on the site. It was our most aggressive plant by far, with thick vines and huge leaves. It had tons of female blooms but only a couple male flowers. I couldn't get anything to set on it, and they all aborted when just larger than a softball. The heat the drought may have had a lot to do with it too. Aborts were a common problem in Iowa last year. I would try it again.

Luke, glad to hear your considering to grow the 1723 , as to how it will perform who knows. I've talked to growers who couldn't get it to germinate, others who pulled for poor performance and one who grew it to 1505 lbs and a bunch in between. like any seed prospect you just can't tell... all I can say my experience growing the 1634 was fantastic...and the best the 1723 has to offer.. is yet to be seen . I'm sure this didn't help much..mail coming your way soon

We grew the 1723 Marshall in 2012. We called her Sister Stephana after my 6th grade teacher (meanest lady/nun I've ever met!) Anyway, that plant was impressive! Grown in one of the hottest years recorded for Colorado - that plant had minimal burn. Because space was an issue I had to gamble on which plant to go with between 2 plants - the Marshall ended out a bonsai. Despite that, it ended out with 2, 400 to 500 lb pumpkins that were grown on sides, the growing tip had been cut about 8' and overall the plant had maybe 75' of growing area. That was our first serious year of growing AG's, so as a first time grower - it suffered thru all kinds of grower errors as well. There's definately potential there - in my "green" opinion. Speaking of Marshall's, I also tried the 991 (I believe it was the 991) in 2013. Another pumpkin with potential, if you're trying for orange with a lovely shape - ours was a real beauty, on a plant that also ended out a bonsai. Betsy

The 1723 grew my PB (929 lbs on a 360 sqft plant), pumpkin went some % heavy, and the plant was looking fine even on hot days (while other AG plants had some flagging leaves and/or some sunscald on young leaves thereafter).

I had good luck with it. I got it to 1347 lbs in 2012. I think it could have gotten bigger but I had never got a thousand pounds yet so I really laid off the water once I got past the thousand by measurement. I didn't want anything bad to happen. Plant was healthy right to the end and no troubles with pollination.

Luke, I have a spare pair of 1723's that you can have as a back up. Let me know and I'll post them over to you.

Pete.

It grew my PB 1135 year before last. Last year I tried it again and it split at 1100+lbs. it broke my heart, because it was a pretty pumpkin. After growing it twice, I can tell you it has a tendency to have a short, stubby stem...which scares me a little.

Thank you all for the input. This is the type of stuff I like to hear when considering a seed.
