Does the patch have to be set shape or can it change as the plant grows? (pruning or dying vines)

The patch can be any shape BUT it does not change shape. From the BP home page go to "Weigh-offs" and then to "Virtual Weigh-offs and Contest" to find a complete list of the rules.

so I can have a T shaped patch with two 25 ft secondaries and 50 ft main vine as long as I keep the plant 18inches wide?

I'm gonna grow just a 150 foot main, no secondaries and pollinate at 6 feet out. Ill straight line the edges of the leaves with scissors so they aren't over a foot wide.

The whole ant and pumpkin have to be inside the 150. So realistically those dimension won't work but it gives an idea of how to set up the space to maximize the pumpkin growth. I'm think 6x25

Farmer Ben, the patch shape you describe is allowed as it does not exceed the 150 square ft limit with room to spare. It will either be a very small or very odd shaped pumpkin that will fit within your patch however.

Curt, if you find issues in the rules please email me with your concerns so they can be addressed. Rule # 1 is important for all.

No problem Luke. Didn't take it as anything. It's kind of funny to figure out ways to grow it in 150. If you could plan on the pumpkin at a specific point on the vine you could have the new snake eating a pumpkin pattern.

Interestingly, if someone grew the new snake eating a pumpkin pattern the perimeter of the patch would be 302 feet. If someone grew a circle shaped patch at 150 square feet the perimeter would be 43.39 feet. However if someone grew a circle patch with a perimeter of 302 feet it would contain 2312.13 square feet! Perhaps pumpkinology will be able to shed new insight into the age old question: "Is a circle bigger than a rectangle?"

Who won the 150 sq ft challenge last year?

It’s nice to see all the creativity and enthusiasm but please read the rules. There are ‘required’ pictures and the first one is of the patch layout itself. The creative patch layouts will require that the plant grow the way you expect and you will get a set in the desired location. Once you declare/publish the patch it is fixed and the plant and the pumpkin must remain inside.

For the Darkside growers 150 sq ft challenge, I took the honors with 751 lbs. Not sure about the morning chat growers...

Phil, I think some Menting guy won the 150 contest last year... He might have got some help from abroad though... Pics are in FlatNorm diary.
