I grew this last summer, And on every pumpkin I would get 4 splits on the stems. One on top and bottom, and on both sides. And of course they got worse as the pumpkin grew until the splits were so bad that they ruined each pumpkin. The plant itself was full of green leaves the whole way to the end. When all my others were done and gone this plant was green and beautiful. Does anyone have an idea to why each pumpkin did this ?

Sounds like an excess of something, maybe nitrogen, like mark said? Was the 1807 the only plant in the garden?

No, I had a 1770 Lieber near the 1807 and nothing like that happened to it.

I had my 2009 Wallace next to Tiny 1495 the 2009 Walletta Big beautiful leaves & green as can be,split the kin at 300 lbs.the split was opposite direction of a normal split. The kin was growing about 16 lbs a day, compared to the 1067 that was 30 feet away was doing 25-30 lbs a day.Tiny was also doing about 16 lbs a day.Two of them were low in nitorgen,But I beleive the 2009 was to much nitro. It was the end of the screenhouse where I dumped the compost. So it got the pigs share. My point is I think nutrient levels can vary more the we think it would.I will spread my compost more uniformly this year.

yep sound like high nitrogen to me.It may not have the same effect on every plant like stem splitting.I do know to much nitrogen will slow down fruit growth by blocking nutrient uptake. This is where the balance they talk about comes in to play I guess. One of these years I will get it right.
