Okay here's my new years resolution: learn how to properly pronounce other growers last names since I have been pronouncing them wrong for the past 7 years.

I'll start: my last name is Abbate = ah-bot-tay

Help me out with these ones: Jutras, Daletas, Poirier, Rodonis, Gerhardt, Geddes, Wallace (Wall-ace?), Leiber, Shenoha, Pukos, Werner, Zoellner, Connoly, Steil.

Lieber and Steil are German.
Like need you say leeber to Lieber.
Say style and make the s to sh: say shtyle to Steil.
But Americans do not use German rules, and I think that the namebearer do not accept my explanations.
Gerhardt is without sibilant in front but a clear e like in ceremony. G is as in get, if you want to speek it German instead of germed...lol

Zoellner is also spoken German: Zöllner.
The meaning of the word is tollkeeper or customs officer.
Don´t say Söllner...better Tßöllner with the ö like u in burnt.
Wallace comes from Moravia, where my great grandfather Leos Janacek grew up in the county or region Wallachei. He was the first composer of Czech Republic then.
Harrumph...Wallach means castrated stallion.

Wallace could also be Scotish and I think if you watch the movie Brave Heart you'll hear how it is pronounced. I think we should wait for someone who has actually met the growers (unlike melopumpsky) to find out how to pronounce names. That said, he is right on his first guess at Steil (style), Joe Werner pronounces it like the word "were" then ner. Of course, that assumes you pronounce "were" the same way I do (short e not a long E).

Haha I find this post really useful. I can say the grower's name in my head but can't for the life of me, pronounce it in person!

Zachkowski is Slavic...like the czech verb zachovat = to look inward, preserve or enshrine
...kowsky or kowski might come from the kos (spoken kosh), so that the whole name is something like a basket with pumpkins stored in it.
We have crossbreeded a honeydew melon onto a Japanese pumpkin, and now have out of F2 a double dominant fruit with a stably round shape and a thin wall like a halloween field but melon-like seed. We want to pollinate that Cucurbita maximelo `Basketball´ with AGs to blow the fruit up and make great light boats with it for pumpkin regattas.
Is here a Zachkowski, who would like to grow the Basketball?
