Steil also means super in German. Scott Steil grew a super "weight : space ratio" of more then 2 with his 1734.5 on 850 square feet. I would appreciate informations about this ratio for all competition pumpkins. I grew a ratio of more then 3 in 2012 with the selfed 922 Mohr 11 and I laugh at growers who do it below 1.5 w:s-r. Congratulations to Scott Steil for his 220.3 x selfed.

Sorry, So.Cal.Grower, here he is introduced: http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_24269242/giant-rivalry-growing-stillwater-pumpkin-weigh-off By the way: meanwhile Chris Stevens bested him 1783.5 for a new Minnesota state record. So congratulations too to Christ Stevens ...also for growing the 1468.5, which was mother for the 922 Mohr 11 and pollinated in Colorado by the great 1725 Harp (grown in pretty poor soil by a minimalist mathematician) from Joe Scherber.

Ludwig, I believe Chris has the Wisconsin State record of 1810.5 lbs. Scott's is the Minnesota State record.

Joe Werner holds the MN state record, also Scott has been researching the weight to space ratio for years and would love to talk more about it, I encourage pumplobster to email him

I grow in the city and have a total of 1000 sq ft. I grow 2 pumpkin plants and usually a watermelon in this area. This year I was fortunate to grow a 1235 on one plant and a 1295.5 on the other. The 1235 was grown on about 350 sq ft. Just wanted to encourage you space challenged growers.

re TimBailey those impressive w:sr numbers gives me food for thought... by my calculations that ratio converts to a w:s(acre) of 153,704 pounds per acre........
this year my plant challenged the horizontal-vertical barrier..i know now that in spite of the naysayers that the space challenged can also grow vertical

At 2 man hours per sqft of plant it would be physically impossible to do this on a large scale and maintain the weight:space ratio that many of largest pumpkins growers use. Once you add more fruit to the plant, you need more plant and space. We are only growing one fruit per plant so we are able to maintain a good weight to space ratio. I would email Chad Revier chadr354@yahoo.com his 1579 Revier was grown on a 300 sqft plant and I know he has a lot of free seeds available.

@ bnot Your shady L-patch is not suited for growing AGs. And your daughter did not want to grow anything, as you lament the second year now. Better grow upon the roof of your garage and optimize the vine area management in the gutter: so leave the leaf there and spray a compost starter on your roof.

@ pumpkinlobster You grow kins to be too tasty. I would suggest trying growing one that not even a slug would eat.
