Thinking about starting a new patch ...just wondering what might be the best grass killer ( like ground clear ) to get rid of the grass before digging up the new patch ....

Yep don't till under kill the grass first! I'd just use roundup- but you need to do it while the plants are still growing. If you do it while dormant it won't be effective.
