I don't agree that they will necessarily rot after being cut off the vine. Treat them with a light bleach or h2o2 solution, a little fungicide, sulfur rub lightly, and let them dry carefully. I keep 20 pound eating squash and pumpkins for 6 - 8 months every year. My 642 AG set inside the local supermarket for over a month three years back. I would think the smaller ones would have a better chance of lasting a while. Until Oct. ?? And I don't think the colour will change very much. Give it a try, nothing to lose.

You might want to cull the side vine fruit one a day, just in case, ha. Even with my very slow growing pumpkins, I culled a side vine fruit and got some massive blossom-end leaking and little splits on the keeper.

Young pumpkins will not last off the vine. They will turn black not orange.
