I've lost two of my three pumpkins to stem splits in the last 5 days with my last pumpkin not looking too good either. I make cuts in stem so the stem can expand and use powder and a fan to prevent any rot. It's never been much of a problem until this year. Last year I had no stem splits on my 1386 and the year before on my 1266. My question is what causes the stem splits? Is it genetic? Is it weather related? Is there something cultural I can do to prevent them? I've been doing this for six years now so I think I have all the basics covered (preventing vine stress, preventing rot, good pumpkin placement, etc) but I would love to know other opinions on what causes fatal stem splits.
